About the Piece

I was kayaking along the lava-strewn shoreline when I spotted this remarkable flightless cormorant perched on its rocky throne. As I steadied my camera, it threw back its head and let out this haunting call that echoed across the water. The Galápagos never cease to amaze me—here was a bird that evolution shaped to dive rather than fly, its stubby wings now perfectly adapted for underwater hunting. I held my breath and captured this moment of pure wild expression.
