Flightless Cormorant Galapagos Islands Wildlife Photography
A flightless cormorant surveys its Galápagos kingdom from barnacle-covered rocks

I spotted this incredible flightless cormorant perched on barnacle-encrusted rocks during my Galápagos expedition. These birds are fearless around humans, having evolved without natural predators. I crouched low to capture eye contact, and for a moment, time stood still as this prehistoric-looking creature regarded me with unmistakable curiosity. The bokeh of shimmering water behind creates a painterly backdrop that makes this endemic species truly shine.
The only cormorant that traded flight for the sea stares back with ancient wisdom
